Vicious by V.E Schwab Book Review

Oh this is exciting, my first book review on my blog!! It will contain a synopsis of the book and my thoughts and feeling on the book – which will be spoiler free – but then I will go on to discussing the book in more detail which is where it will become a spoiler zone. The spoiler zone will be the bit in red, so you then know not to read these bits, and can skip to the black bit at the bottom of the post as I don’t want to be the one that ruins the book for you.

My Rating =

Goodreads blurb =

“Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?”

Let me just start off by saying that I was apprehensive going into this book as there was so much hype behind it; and I was very late onto the wagon of hype for this book. Also although I don’t have a problem with adult books – I wasn’t sure if it would be too slow or just not for me; as I mainly read YA books. But oh wow did it live up to the hype. I loved this book! I couldn’t even tell it was an adult book it felt like a YA, so don’t let the fact that it’s a adult book stop you from reading it; it was so action pact and engaging like a YA book. It was interesting to read a book about the exploration of whether there is a good or bad or just middle ground. Every character – bar maybe one – did evil things even if they thought they were doing it for the greater good, which showed how a person’s belief can completely warp and change them; and in extreme cases like this do things that lead them to do and make horrendous decisions. There are time jumps in the book where we see Eli and Victors past – but I didn’t find them to be confusing at all. They were clear and made the story deeper and better developed. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are into books with evil villains in it, books that are engaging and have lots of twists and turns, books that well developed characters and plot and if you are a fan of V.E Schwab’s other books.

Spoiler zone

So I thought that Sydney was the only character that you could say was the nearest to being good, as she doesn’t actually want to use her power and is in fact scared and repulsed by it. I loved itwhen Sydney’s sister said – near the end of the book – go to somewhere you will be safe and she went to where Victor was. That gave me so many feelings; as Victor was like the best friend and family Sydney had never had.

I would have liked it if Angie had stayed on scene for a little wincy bit longer or if she came back alive but wasn’t an EO, just to create more of drama and a change in dynamics and to get to know her better. I felt sorry for Mitch – as he constantly was at the wrong place at the wrong time. When he was shot I was like “Again wrong place wrong time”, and then I was like “But he surly can’t die”. It made think who would want to die in a bathroom of a pub – um not me. All in all – Eli initially wants to change the world by killing all of the EO’s – but instead changes himself and everyone around him.

Thank you – I really appreciate you saying you enjoyed it and you thought that it was a great review.
